Confirm everything is completely dry

Both the paver surfaces and the joints must be completely dry before you begin. Any moisture will prematurely activate the polymers, causing them to stick to the paver surface. Wait for a fully dry day. Pavers that have been pressure washed or rained on need at least 24 to 48 hours to dry completely.
\n
Overlay installs: drainage holes (2 inch diameter, spaced approximately 10 feet apart at the lowest slab elevations) must be in place, filled with 3/8 inch stone, and covered with a 1 ft x 1 ft patch of Gator Fabric GF4.4 before applying.

Narrow joints require extra sweeping passes to fill completely.

Run a vibratory plate compactor to compact Alliance Gator Maxx Sand equipped with a rubber protective pad over the entire paved surface. The final sand level must sit at least 1/8 inch below the top of the paver surface or 1/8 inch below the chamfer edge.

On textured or pre-finished paver surfaces: clear all sand from the paver face before compacting to avoid scratching or damaging the surface finish.

Use a hard bristle broom followed by a soft broom to remove the majority of remaining sand from the paver surfaces. This step is required and must be completed before watering.

Set your hose nozzle to the shower setting. Start at the lowest point of the installation and work upward. Do not over water or allow the surface to dry out during the activation phase. Standing water will wash sand out of the joints.

On slopes and pool surrounds: always start watering at the lowest point and work upward. Starting at the top will pull sand downhill and cause uneven activation.

How to Install Alliance Gator Maxx Sand Polymeric Sand
Always refer to the latest Alliance Gator Maxx Sand Technical Data Sheet (TDS) before installing. Pavers must be installed per ICPI Tech Spec No. 2.
Important: Unlike the G2-formula products, Alliance Gator Maxx Sand requires a leaf blower step before water activation. Have a leaf blower ready before you start.

Confirm everything is completely dry
Both the paver surfaces and the joints must be completely dry before you begin. Any moisture will prematurely activate the polymers, causing them to stick to the paver surface. Wait for a fully dry day. Pavers that have been pressure washed or rained on need at least 24 to 48 hours to dry completely.
Overlay installs: drainage holes (2 inch diameter, spaced approximately 10 feet apart at the lowest slab elevations) must be in place, filled with 3/8 inch stone, and covered with a 1 ft x 1 ft patch of Gator Fabric GF4.4 before applying.

Spread and sweep polymeric sand into all joints
Pour Alliance Gator Maxx Sand onto the dry paver surface and use a hard bristle broom to sweep it into the joints in multiple directions. Work in sections and make multiple passes to ensure full joint penetration. Leave a layer of sand on top of the pavers for the compaction step. Narrow joints require extra sweeping passes to fill completely.

Compact with a plate compactor
Run a vibratory plate compactor to compact Alliance Gator Maxx Sand equipped with a rubber protective pad over the entire paved surface. Work in multiple directions to eliminate air pockets and fully pack the joints. After compacting, sweep additional sand into any joints that need topping off, then compact again. The final sand level must sit at least 1/8 inch below the top of the paver surface or 1/8 inch below the chamfer edge.
On textured or pre-finished paver surfaces: clear all sand from the paver face before compacting to avoid scratching or damaging the surface finish.

Sweep off surface excess then use a leaf blower
Use a hard bristle broom followed by a soft broom to remove the majority of remaining sand from the paver surfaces. Then use a leaf blower to clear all remaining Gator Maxx Sand residue from the paver face. Work in manageable sections of approximately 100 square feet. This step is required and must be completed before watering.

Activate with water. shower setting, section by section
Set your hose nozzle to the shower setting. Start at the lowest point of the installation and work upward. Water each 30 square foot section for approximately 30 seconds until the sand repels the water and it begins pooling on the joints. Move immediately to the next section. Do not over water or allow the surface to dry out during the activation phase. Standing water will wash sand out of the joints.
On slopes and pool surrounds: always start watering at the lowest point and work upward. Starting at the top will pull sand downhill and cause uneven activation.

Stay off until fully cured
On a traditional gravel base, the installation is rain safe in 1 hour. On an overlay installation, rain safe after 24 hours. Keep foot traffic and vehicles off until the joints are fully cured. The joints will develop a firm crust on top after curing which is completely normal and by design.

Alliance Gator Maxx Sand polymeric sand is significantly lower maintenance than regular paver joint sand, but it is not completely maintenance free. Here is exactly what to do to keep your paver joints in top condition for years to come.
Routine cleaning Apply Gator Shampoo or a paver-safe cleaner to the full paver surface including the joints. Rinse with a garden hose on the shower setting at standard residential water pressure, typically up to 80 psi. No pressure washer is required or recommended directly on the joints.
White haze on pavers Usually caused by efflorescence from the pavers triggered during water activation, or by polymer residue from applying on a surface that was not fully dry. Treat with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. The haze also fades naturally over time with weathering and sun exposure.
Moss, mold, or mildew These are drainage and shade issues, not a sand problem. Treat the surface with a paver-safe cleaner. For long term prevention, improve drainage and reduce shade over the paved area.

Patio pavers on a traditional gravel base Ideal for standard interlocking concrete paver patios with joints up to 2 inches wide on a properly prepared traditional gravel base system.
Overlay installations on existing concrete slabs Compatible with overlay applications over concrete slabs for joints up to 2 inches. Drainage holes (2 inch diameter, approximately 10 feet apart at lowest slab elevations) must be pre-drilled, filled with 3/8 inch stone, and covered with Gator Fabric GF4.4.

How to Install Alliance Gator Maxx Sand Polymeric Sand
Always refer to the latest Alliance Gator Maxx Sand Technical Data Sheet (TDS) before installing. Pavers must be installed per ICPI Tech Spec No. 2.
Important: Unlike the G2-formula products, Alliance Gator Maxx Sand requires a leaf blower step before water activation. Have a leaf blower ready before you start.

Confirm everything is completely dry
Both the paver surfaces and the joints must be completely dry before you begin. Any moisture will prematurely activate the polymers, causing them to stick to the paver surface. Wait for a fully dry day. Pavers that have been pressure washed or rained on need at least 24 to 48 hours to dry completely.
Overlay installs: drainage holes (2 inch diameter, spaced approximately 10 feet apart at the lowest slab elevations) must be in place, filled with 3/8 inch stone, and covered with a 1 ft x 1 ft patch of Gator Fabric GF4.4 before applying.

Spread and sweep polymeric sand into all joints
Pour Alliance Gator Maxx Sand onto the dry paver surface and use a hard bristle broom to sweep it into the joints in multiple directions. Work in sections and make multiple passes to ensure full joint penetration. Leave a layer of sand on top of the pavers for the compaction step. Narrow joints require extra sweeping passes to fill completely.

Compact with a plate compactor
Run a vibratory plate compactor to compact Alliance Gator Maxx Sand equipped with a rubber protective pad over the entire paved surface. Work in multiple directions to eliminate air pockets and fully pack the joints. After compacting, sweep additional sand into any joints that need topping off, then compact again. The final sand level must sit at least 1/8 inch below the top of the paver surface or 1/8 inch below the chamfer edge.
On textured or pre-finished paver surfaces: clear all sand from the paver face before compacting to avoid scratching or damaging the surface finish.

Sweep off surface excess then use a leaf blower
Use a hard bristle broom followed by a soft broom to remove the majority of remaining sand from the paver surfaces. Then use a leaf blower to clear all remaining Gator Maxx Sand residue from the paver face. Work in manageable sections of approximately 100 square feet. This step is required and must be completed before watering.

Activate with water. shower setting, section by section
Set your hose nozzle to the shower setting. Start at the lowest point of the installation and work upward. Water each 30 square foot section for approximately 30 seconds until the sand repels the water and it begins pooling on the joints. Move immediately to the next section. Do not over water or allow the surface to dry out during the activation phase. Standing water will wash sand out of the joints.
On slopes and pool surrounds: always start watering at the lowest point and work upward. Starting at the top will pull sand downhill and cause uneven activation.

Stay off until fully cured
On a traditional gravel base, the installation is rain safe in 1 hour. On an overlay installation, rain safe after 24 hours. Keep foot traffic and vehicles off until the joints are fully cured. The joints will develop a firm crust on top after curing which is completely normal and by design.
Do not apply if any of these conditions exist
Paver surfaces or joints are damp or wet in any way
Temperature is at or below 32°F (0°C)
Rain is expected within 1 hour of water activation on traditional base, or within 24 hours on an overlay
Pavers are installed on aggregates with large open voids, as the sand will migrate through
Pavers are installed on asphalt. Do not sweep Gator Maxx Sand over asphalt surfaces
Pavers are fanned rather than fully interlocked. Fanned pavers do not qualify for vehicular use

Long Term Maintenance for Alliance Gator Maxx Sand Polymeric Sand Paver Joints
Alliance Gator Maxx Sand polymeric sand is significantly lower maintenance than regular paver joint sand, but it is not completely maintenance free. Here is exactly what to do to keep your paver joints in top condition for years to come.
Routine cleaning Apply Gator Shampoo or a paver-safe cleaner to the full paver surface including the joints. Rinse with a garden hose on the shower setting at standard residential water pressure, typically up to 80 psi. No pressure washer is required or recommended directly on the joints.
White haze on pavers Usually caused by efflorescence from the pavers triggered during water activation, or by polymer residue from applying on a surface that was not fully dry. Treat with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. The haze also fades naturally over time with weathering and sun exposure.
Moss, mold, or mildew These are drainage and shade issues, not a sand problem. Treat the surface with a paver-safe cleaner. For long term prevention, improve drainage and reduce shade over the paved area.
Re-sanding worn joints Remove all old jointing material completely before re applying. Do not apply new Alliance Gator Maxx Sand on top of old polymeric sand. Pavers must be fully dry before starting. Then follow the standard six-step installation process from the beginning.
Storing leftover bags Alliance Gator Maxx Sand comes in waterproof bags. Lay bags flat with the front facing up. Sealed intact bags and intact pallets can be safely stored outdoors until needed.
